About the Retreat

The Interactive Flute Session started Fall 2013 in Saline, MI. Participants were able to spend an afternoon with Sharon Sparrow, Assistant Principal Flutist of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, listening, learning, performing, and laughing. Each time, participants of the flute session walked away rejuvenated having had an immensely enjoyable experience. This first summer interactive session offers the added benefit of a picturesque setting on the shores of Lake Michigan in beautiful South Haven MI.

  • Mozart Concertos and Cadenzav Writing

A staple of the flute repertoire, Mozart's flute concertos come to life in this class! Learn why style and interpretation of these inspiring pieces are so important and why they are repeatedly required on audition lists.  Sharon will also take you on a fun journey of writing your own cadenza for these masterworks!

  • INtonation OUTtonation

Playing IN tune is one of our greatest responsibilities as a flutist! From the tuning note, to how to place notes in a chord, this class will explore all aspects of INtonation. Sharon will also give you tools to hear when you are NOT in tune, hence the dreaded OUTtonation!

  • The Bach Sonatas

As flutists, we are indebted to Bach for writing these gems for us! Let's learn how to show him our gratitude by learning correct style, articulation and phrasing as we perform his beautiful sonatas.

  • Orchestral Excerpts Workshop

Based on the award winning book "6 Weeks to Finals", Sharon will walk us through audition preparation while sharing invauable tidbits on how to practice the most required excerpts for flute auditions!

  • Master Class

In a traditional setting, it's your turn to shine! Whether performing a solo, duo, or ensemble piece, the Sparrow/Zook master class is always a special and fun opportunity not to be missed. Their rapport with each other as well as each participant is always stimulating, rewarding, positive and insightful. This year we are pleased to have Rudolf Ozolins joining us on the piano to collaborate, as well as share tips on how to work with your accompanist!

  • Inspiring Stories, Listening, and the art of sharing your talent

This class has it all! From inspiring stories of a lifelong career, to how to actually "listen" to a recording as you prepare and finally, how to make the shift from "I'm nervous to play" to "I'm so excited to share my talent".
